Military bunkers

Kamzík KK6 is a First World War artillery Kaverne. It is the largest in Bratislava, with concrete lining along its entire length, four entrances, and two emergency exits. Relatively spacious, it serves as a museum and hosts occasional exhibitions and tours. It is a landmark destination for presenting the history and finds of the First World War in Bratislava, as well as a popular place for an outing. It is one of many artillery Kavernen built around Bratislava during the First World War to defend against the advancing Russian army. In total, there are more than 50 of these fortifications around Bratislava. They were never used in action, however, because no fighting took place in Bratislava. Kamzík Kaverne 6 was driven into the rock using mining techniques, after which the walls were lined with concrete. This Kaverne is unique in that it is one of the few with concrete lining along its entire length. It is a large-type Kaverne, with four entrances and two emergency exits. An emergency exit was a vertical shaft lined with concrete, resembling a wide chimney, with steps set into the concrete to form a ladder. Kamzík Kaverne 6 is located at the summit of Kamzík in the Bratislava-Nové Mesto municipal district. It can be reached on foot along a hiking trail, around 400 m north-west of the cable-car station. The Kaverne was cleaned up and opened by volunteers from the civic association Bunkre, who explore and map these structures and have made them accessible to visitors today. The fortification is open to the public only during various anniversaries and events. Outside these times, it can be visited by appointment (made by telephone or email). During the tour, visitors can learn a great deal about the history of Bratislava’s bunkers.
