Military bunkers

This First World War shelter was built for artillerymen and ammunition. It was constructed between 1914 and 1915 as part of the fortification line around the whole of Bratislava, intended to defend the city and its wider surroundings.
The Dynamitfabrik Unterstand has a typical rectangular shape, with brick masonry walls and a concrete ceiling. Unterstände were sunk below ground level and built on flat terrain or in places where it was not possible to cover the roof with enough earth. The entrance is located in the centre of the bunker’s longer wall and is always protected by a roofed concrete wall, with exits to both sides along the wall so that it would not be blocked during bombardment. The bunker is located on Račianska Street by Mladá garda, near the Guthaus building. It is one of seven surviving Unterstände in Bratislava and is also very easy to reach by public transport. In future, the civic association Bunkre and the Bratislava-Nové Mesto municipal district plan to restore the site and establish a museum there.
