Military bunkers

This First World War Kaverne above Dúbravka served as a shelter for artillerymen and ammunition. Above Dúbravka, there are eight hidden First World War Kavernen (six are partially filled in), linked by an educational trail. Unlike the other groups, this cluster was positioned in front of Bratislava’s defensive line towards the north-west. One possible starting point is Brižitská Street, from where the educational Great War Trail has linked the Kavernen in the Dúbravská Hlavica massif since 2017. The Great War Trail is marked with yellow waymarks and wooden yellow arrows. The trail is approximately 8 km long, has four information panels, and can be completed in about two hours. Dúbravka Kaverne 2 was opened to the public by the civic association Bunkre in 2014 after two years of volunteer work. This Kaverne lies deepest underground of all the Kavernen in Bratislava, at around 8–10 metres. It has two “chimneys” (emergency exits) and period inscriptions carved into the walls by soldiers. The year 1915 is clearly recorded on the wall by the entrance. The Kaverne is accessible on selected dates or by arrangement. The association occasionally organises guided tours explaining the history of Bratislava’s Kavernen, including descriptions and examples of their most interesting features. Visits should be arranged in advance, and it is advisable to bring good footwear and a torch.
