Military bunkers

This bunker, dating from 1933–35, stands beside the D2 motorway and almost miraculously escaped demolition during the motorway’s construction. Bunkers B-S 5a and B-S 5b were not so lucky: built into the embankment of Viedenská cesta, they were destroyed during the construction of the motorway and buried beneath the new road embankment.
Bunker B-S 10 dates from 1933–35, when General Josef Šnejdárek had Petržalka fortified against Hungary with a line of nine structures. These bunkers were incorporated into the defence of Petržalka as part of the Czechoslovak fortifications of 1935–38. In view of subsequent historical events and the forced handover of the borderlands to Germany, they were never used for their original purpose. During the Second World War, they were used by the German army for training purposes and, at the end of the war, as part of the city’s defence within “Festung Pressburg”. The bunker is located on the edge of Petržalka, just beyond the D2 motorway, roughly between AAA Auto and the bakeries. It can be accessed only from the opposite side, from the former border-guard road known as the signálka (the asphalt border-guard road running along the frontier), which can be reached from Kopčianska Street. From the signálka, it is necessary to cross a field. The bunker and its surroundings have now been revitalised as a place that can be rented for relaxation and barbecues; inside, it is furnished with beds and appliances, and can also be rented overnight.
