Explore the remaining parts of the Iron Curtain
November and December 1989 were months that brought significant societal and political changes. The gradual demise of the one-party state and the slow transformation to a democratic society introduced some visible changes to the borderlands of western Slovakia. The dismantling of the physical barriers installed at the Austrian border was one of the most significant events of that time.
We have mapped the last authentic places related to the Iron Curtain, which will take you back to the era prior to 1989. The places that you are able to explore are truly the last fragments of the physical barriers known as the Iron Curtain. You will be able to see and touch some of the disjointed fragments that remain in Slovakia. These include a signal wall, crossing gate and concrete pyramids. All of these were used at the feared border with the free world to prevent Czechoslovak citizens from travelling freely and discovering the world. Thanks to these changes, you are now able to explore the world around the Iron Curtain.
