Štefan S. and Ladislav G. were both 19-year-old tourists from Hungary who attempted to enter Austria from Czechoslovakia. Looking at the map, they chose as the most suitable location the section of the border between Bratislava and Devín Castle that stands in the immediate vicinity of the heavily guarded border. On 4 September 1982, they boarded a bus under the SNP Bridge heading towards Devín Castle. On their way there, they observed technical measures installed along the road. They decided to get off the bus before reaching the Devín city borough and at 9 p.m. they attempted to climb over the wire barrier. At that moment, they triggered a signalling device and the border patrol moved in. After getting expelled from Czechoslovakia, they served their sentence in Hungary.
