Killed

On the last day of June 1986, eighteen-year-old Hartmut decided to cross the border between the German Democratic Republic and Czechoslovakia near the small village of Petrovice. On 1 August, he travelled by train via Prague to Bratislava where he spent a week accommodated in the Družba student hostel. On 8 August, he attempted to cross the state border into Austria at 10:25 p.m. in the area of the Kossuth Street in Petržalka. He soon met his death in the cornfield, only 22 metres away from his destination. He did not survive the brutal attack by the patrol dogs “Roby” and “Ryšo”.
