Four young people from Bratislava attempted to leave the country without permission by the authorities. After observing the vicinity of the Bratislava Harbour over a short period, they decided to make their escape there. On 31 July 1971, in the early morning hours, they entered the poorly secured site of a consumer cooperative company located right next to the Bratislava Harbour. From there, moving in two groups, they gradually made their way to the berth area of cargo ships. Their plan was simple – to hide themselves in the cargo hold of a ship heading not to Austria but rather to the People’s Republic of Hungary and on to Yugoslavia. They thought that ships bound for a friendly socialist country would not be thoroughly checked. However, their hiding place was discovered by the control officer of the Bratislava-Harbour Passport Control Office.
