Despite the introduction of special technical measures, some illegal escapes could not have been prevented. An atypical breach of the state border took place on 11 June 1966 at the 7th Border Unit in Devínske Jazero where the intruder, an employee of a civilian company, was working on the construction of the unit’s barracks. While working at this unit, he observed how the system worked and took advantage of the benevolence when persons were allowed to get behind a wire barrier in order to fish. Later, he himself managed to get behind the wire barrier on a pretence of catching some fish, although he did not have a fishing permit. In order to deceive the border guard patrol and officials, he got hold of some fishing rods and an inflatable boat used to cross the Morava River. He even had that boat stored for an extensive period at the unit’s barracks under the pretext of using it for fishing.
