The idea of using the Danube River to illegally cross the state border into Austria emerged very early after the appearance of the Iron Curtain. However, the actual implementation was both technically and physically difficult and considered obsolete by the border guards. This was why the information in the Austrian newspapers “Kurier” and “Neu Krone Zeitung” came as a big surprise. They published a story about a sensational feat of a Czechoslovak citizen who, on 8 November 1981, crossed the river from Karlova Ves into Austria in diving gear.
