In the morning hours of 13 October 1964, an inconspicuous 39-year-old man was walking through the gardens in the Bratislava-Devín city borough. He proceeded cautiously through the wooded area of the Devín gardens until getting in close proximity to the engineering-technical barriers along the road leading from Devín to Devínská Nová Ves. It was there that he began to cut through the individual parts of the barbed wire barrier. He was disturbed by the approaching border guard patrol at 10:25 a.m. He quickly retreated along the well-known path leading through the forest and gardens owned by the inhabitants of Devín. He was detained by a two-man border guard patrol at 11:15 a.m. on grounds of attempting to illegally cross the state border.
