Three men, aged 18 to 19, decided to flee to Austria together. After being refused travel documents, they were unable to leave Czechoslovakia legally in order to travel to the West. It was a Tatra 148 crane parked at the construction site of the New Bridge that was supposed to help them on their way to freedom. Using this crane, the three young men attempted to break through the border barrier at high speed on 28 April 1970 at 2:00 a.m. A series of shots and the barrier made of reinforced concrete prevented the boys from reaching Austria.
