Cousins – Swimmers

Successful escape

In the early morning of 24 July 1988, a border patrol walking in the village of Záhorská Ves noticed footprints in the vicinity of the engineering-technical barrier. A shovel and trampled tall grass suggested an unpunished violation of the state border – a breach. The number of breaching persons, as well as their age and gender, were unknown to the investigating bodies of the Border Guard and State Security. The answer to their questions came from the Intelligence Department at the 11th Brigade of the Bratislava Border Guard, which intercepted an article in the Austrian newspapers Arbeiter Zeitung – Tagblatt and Kronenzeitung published on 27 July 1988. From this article, they learned about the successful crossing of the Iron Curtain by Miroslav Š.(18) and Stanislav F. (17).
