On 4 October 1953, only a few weeks after construction and putting the engineering-technical measures into operation at the border, a couple was advancing through the darkness at night. A man and a woman were trying to cross the Morava River into Austria south of the village of Vysoká pri Morave. They were making their way through wet and overgrown terrain. The silence of the night was broken by a shot and a sound of a burning flare. The terrain was illuminated and the screams were heard:“Stop!”, followed by gunshots. The injured woman was rushed to hospital.
