Unsuccessful escape

On 10 July 1971 at night, a roaring engine woke up the members of the border guard patrol in Petržalka at the Viedenská cesta checkpoint at 2:30 a.m.The bus of RTO 706 type belonging to the Bratislava Public Transport Company was approaching the Petržalka-Berg border crossing at full speed. The bus broke through the first of the three barriers on the road leading to Austria. However, the noise and shots fired by the first patrol alerted the guards at the last security barrier – made of reinforced concrete – and they opened fire at the speeding bus using automatic weapons. The bus ended up wedged under the barrier, along with the driver Ladislav G. who was 19 years old. More than 100 shots were fired during this escape attempt.
