True stories

Budapestian

Killed

Being only 19 years old, Antal P. from Budapest decided to visit Bratislava in October 1955. There, he conceived the idea to use his stay in Bratislava to illegally cross the border into Austria. Like many other so-called “border trespassers”, he decided to cross in the area of the Petržalka city borough. This was the only dry section of the state border with Austria. On 20 October 1955, under the cover of darkness he decided to crawl to the wire barriers in the Kopčany area. At about 8:15 p.m., a two-man border patrol heard some suspicious rustling and “clacking” sound at the wire barriers. They then saw a motionless silhouette of a young man stuck in the wire barriers. He was killed by the so-called electrical border protection equipment.
