Bag On The Riverbank

Successful escape

The importance of Devínská Nová Ves during the existence of the so-called Iron Curtain is evidenced by a high number of attempts to cross the state border illegally between 1951 and 1989 at this location. This spot was also used by an unknown couple in the first half of 1967. Under the cover of darkness, they carefully cut through the wire barrier and crawled to the bank of the Morava River. There, they left behind a bag with newspapers inside and a coat. In the cold weather of an early spring they successfully swam to the Austrian side of the Morava River.
